Composting

Page history last edited by s3 2 yrs ago

Mrs. Bowers 3rd grade class has been collecting compost and observing what happens to it over time. We started collecting compost at the beginning of September 2007 and have watched it change since then. When we track back in on October 22nd 2007 what do you think it will look like?? Do you think the worms we saw earlier in it will still be there?

I think the compost will be like brown bits of soil. There may be a banana peel or some other fruit in it still. I think the worms will still be alive because they have been feeding on compost and there was holes in the bin so they could breathe. Mrs. Bowers' class

Q - What happened to the compost over track out?

O - Over track out the compost grinded up into rich humus soil. There might still be a little bit of banana peels and other items that need to still decompose, but over time this should turn into humus.I think there still might be a few worms left in the bin. Ben

Ben- Why do you only think that a few worms will still be there? Haley15

Haley - I think there are only a few worms left because it was so hot outside. I think there wasn't enough water in the soil for them to survive so they crumbled up. Ben 11

Ben 11-Why do you think the food is still there?-Sarah 3

O - There was sticks in the compost. We couldn't see the compost real good that we put it in the bin in September before we tracked out. I think the worms are still in there eating and making the soil clean. Daniel18

Daniel-I think that the worms are still there to because the worms are probably eating the compost like you said. Alli 1

Daniel-Why do you think the worms are still there?Sarah 3

O - I saw plants that were purple blossoms with green stems in the compost bin.

P - I think the worms are still at the bottom of the compost. Haley 15

Haley - I think the worms are still at the bottom too, because we have been feeding

the compost bin so they have had enough food to eat. Why do you think the worms are still there??

Reid 17

I think the worms are there because they have been eating the soil and stuff.

Haley- why do you think the worms are still there?I dont think the worms are going to be there probly because  theres not unoff

water in the compost.Sarah 3

O - I saw dead flowers and dirt and the compost my class put in the bin.

P - Over time I predict that the compost will decompose because over time the worms will be eating it! Alli 1

Q-Why do you think that?Sarah 3

O - I saw dead flowers and worms and I also saw rich soil. Tony 25

Great picture Tony, How long do you think it will take for the flowers to decompose? Mrs. Bowers

Mrs. Bowers - I think it will take maybe 2 or 3 days to decompose. Tony 25

O - I saw only some worms and dead plants. Maybe even some left over bannana peels. Connor 23

O - When I observed the compost I saw twigs and dead flowers. I couldn't really see the worms because the twigs were covering the top of the compost.

P - I predict that the worms got out of the compost bin because there were holes that they could breathe out of and maybe they got out of there. Savannah22

O - I  saw  saw  dead  flowers  and  soil,worms ,  ants.

P - I think the dead flowers will  turn  into  humus. Rosie24

O - I observed  dead plants on top of the soil. The soil is moist and I think that the worms are all still alive.

Q - I wonder if ants got inside the compost and what will happen if they did?? Robert19

O - I saw banana peels, ant hills, worms, one tiny frog, and lots of rich soil called humus.

Q - I wonder if the worms feeded off our banana peels and apple cores?? I wonder if they are all still alive??Danny21

O - I saw some tree branches and and dirt. Michael9

O - I observed flower stems, worms, and banana peels.

P - I predict that the worms will disappear because they ate so much compost. Emma 13

Q-oh and why do you think the worms disapeared?Sarah
